This machine probably came out as a treadle machine originally, and then was converted to electric (by the looks of the motor that is labeled as a "Standard", and the light is too new for the age of the machine).  It probably would have had a spoked hand wheel on it that would have worked with an electric motor, so I'm not sure why the wheel was replaced with a smaller solid wheel.

Also, take a close look at the decals.  The arm and bed center decals look like the Paperclip pattern, while the border decals (around the edge of the bed) look like the Knots & Rectangles pattern.  Were the Paperclip decals even around in 1918?  Has the machine been repainted, or did it come out of the Elizabethport factory this way?  If the machine is a repaint by Singer, why would they not paint the entire machine during rehab, and apply all new decals?  If the machine is a repaint by an individual, where did they get the new decals, and wouldn't you think that the border would have as much need for repaint and new decals as the center of the bed and the arm? Hmmm.

"Paddy" "Whiplash"

Singer Model 319W Treadle
Singer 319W Serial # W1619512     In my MUTT

Artisan Treadle
This machine is only the second 319W that I've come across in my collecting, so now I have two.  It was offered to me for sale on St. Patrick's Day 2014, and since it's green, I nicknamed it "Paddy".  But that nickname didn't stick, and I re-named it "Whiplash", a play on the term backlash that the slightest backward motion of my treadle wheel tends to create, especially when I get to "whipping around" thinking that I'm getting good at operating a treadle.  It is in service as a treadle machine primarily for mending denim jeans.  The after-market spoked wheel was poorly machined and not saleable, so I used it on this machine to get some good out of it.  I added a narrow strip of oak-tanned leather, joined with a treadle belt clip, to provide a surface for the bobbin winder tire to ride on without modifying the bobbin winder.  I need to counter-sink the clip into a groove in the leather to reduce the vibration of the tire riding over the clip.  The wobble in the poor hand wheel requires that I hold the winder against the wheel, but I do wind my bobbins on it.
